Our story
Farming the way it should be.
Three generations of care, craft, and a deep respect for the land — just outside Melbourne.
Where we come from
Started with a few hens. Grown with purpose.
Melbourne Egg Co began on a small plot in the Yarra Valley, where our family had farmed for decades. What started as a few dozen hens for the local farmers' market grew into something we never expected — a community of people who genuinely cared about where their food came from.
Today we run a small, intentional operation. We haven't scaled for the sake of it. Every decision we make — from flock size to feed to how much space each hen gets — is guided by one question: would we be comfortable if our customers could see exactly what we're doing?
The answer is always yes. That's the standard we hold ourselves to.
What we stand for
Pasture first
Our hens have year-round access to open pasture. No rotations, no seasonal lockdowns — just grass, sunshine, and room to roam.
Animal welfare
We follow RSPCA Approved Farming standards and go further. Flock sizes are kept small so every bird gets proper attention and care.
Melbourne provenance
Our farm is in the Yarra Valley, less than an hour from the CBD. Eggs are collected daily and delivered within 48 hours of laying.
Certified free-range
We're certified by Free Range Egg & Poultry Australia (FREPA) — the most rigorous free-range standard in the country.
Animal welfare
Happy hens lay better eggs. It's that simple.
We believe the welfare of our hens isn't just an ethical obligation — it's the single biggest factor in egg quality. Stress-free birds with access to natural foraging produce eggs with deeper yolks, firmer whites, and a flavour that's noticeably different. We limit our flock to 1,500 birds across 10 hectares of pasture. That's roughly 67 square metres per hen — far beyond any certification requirement.
Melbourne provenance
Yarra Valley grown. Melbourne delivered.
We're proud to be a genuinely local producer. Our farm sits in the Yarra Valley, one of Victoria's most fertile growing regions. Eggs are collected every morning, graded on-farm, and dispatched to Melbourne the same day. No cold storage. No distribution centres. Just fresh eggs, direct.
